In the morning hours RCMP Deputy Commissioner Mike Cabana, receives a call from a FBI agent about a discovery made on the dark corners of the internet. It’s an ISIS inspired martyrdom video, starring a mystery man wearing a black balaclava. The would-be terrorist was planning an imminent attack, the agent said, location unknown.
“Oh Canada, you received many warning,” says the masked man, his camera rolling. “You were told many times what will become of those who fight against the Islamic state… There is a fire burning in the chest of every Muslim and this fire can be cooled only by the spilling of your blood.” He finishes his two minute rant by pledging allegiance to abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State, who “has called for Jihad in the lands of the crusaders.”
“I’m responding to this call,” the man says.

Dana Kennedy writing for the Daily beast in 2015, asks” Ignore growing Muslim fundamentalism and extremism in Canada at your peril. That’s the message an increasingly vocal number of moderate and secular Canada Muslims and counterterrorism experts want to send to the United Sates and the rest of the world.”
According to Brian Levin, a former NYPD officer turned counter-terrorism and extremism specialist at San Bernardino State. “People talk about Mexico,” said Levin “They totally overlook Canada. Nobody has any idea what’s going on up there. In my opinion it’s a bigger threat than Mexico.”
Holy hockey sticks Batman!
What is going on here?
This is the point in blog reading where we collectively shout out “Fake News.”
Unfortunately this is not the case. Yes, we do have the bad guys running around. But let’s be clear in terms of who the bad guys are. As in the United States most terrorist actions are domestically grown. Inspired by extremist events certainly but very few are directed by a terrorist group.
In Canada these insane displays of violence directed to others are often the result of lone actors. From whatever delusional recess of their mind they strike out and harm individuals who are unaware of their personnel demons they use as a catalyst. These “soft targets” often result in a unified cry of “terrorists “at the beach head.
Former NYPD officer Brian Levin, can rest easy in the fact that Canada is not a “Disneyland” of terrorist activity. Our RCMP and our Canadian Security Intelligence Service have an upper hand of keeping “lone actor” activists to a minimum.
Doctor Peter Collins, a forensic psychiatry expert here in Canada, has hands on experience in dealing with this issue and has written about the subject of the psychology of extremism along with many other experts who meet on a regular basis as a group called the Canadian Association of Threat Assessment Professionals. This group is a who’s who of experts all across Canada and North America.
I and my partner are honored to be part of this esteemed group and perhaps in a small we play a small part in saying “We stand on guard for thee.”
